Content in a Networked Era
almostcool: “Making content work in a networked era is going to be about living in the streams, consuming and producing alongside “customers.” Consuming to understand, producing to be relevant. Content creators are not going to get to dictate the cultural norms just because they can make their content available; they are still accountable to those who are trafficking content.” — “Streams...

A Hypothetical Query.
Upon (hypothetically) unlocking and jailbreaking my primary communications device, I asked a single question: “I know a lot of developers - can I still buy apps from the store in the normal way?” Meaning: I will happily pay for applications (and prefer to do so if I have some connection to those developing the applications). I consider paying for mobile software normal (moreso than...

Building People, not Brands.
[I’m reading Adland by James P Othmer on my staycation this week, before starting my new gig.  A comment on the impending death of brands and branding by Rick Webb that is quoted in the book got me thinking.] I’m a very strong believer in badge theory, the idea that people make purchases, intentionally or subconsciously, to help establish cues to their identity.  Where I step away...

Kitty Hawk and Post-Digital Copyright
Letting the current generation of lawmakers decide what is and isn’t permissible online is like letting the pre-flight lawmakers decide that land ownership extends infinitely up into the air. Which, if I’m not mistaken, is exactly what some people thought should happen, in the post-Kitty Hawk USA. This is the level of absurdity we’re talking about, when we talk about demanding...

the only 3 strategies for modern news...
chartreuse: speed (TMZ, Drudge Report, etc.) deep (includes Wall Street Journal, New York Times, etc.l ) spin (includes Daily Show, Fox News, ect.) There are some organizations that try to be a hybrid of two or three the most successful usually focus only on one. I’d add a fourth - Analytical. It’s different than deep, IMHO, because depth is a matter of detail, whereas analysis...
