I firmly believe that statements like that are used to try to shame people away from making money with creative skill.

My stance has always been that advertising is art with a clear objective outcome, rather than just ‘express something, and get people to think’.

Banksy is pretty outspoken about how advertising is ruining everything, especially artists. I could make a pretty compelling argument that Banksy is the artist closest to advertiser, in terms of messaging, copy, and clarity and direction of his calls to action, but I generally just think he’s complaining about bad, obnoxious ads, of which there are too many.
