Facebook doesn’t care what your friends think about you.
The above screenshot exists because a friend of mine (who graciously gave permission for me to share this) liked iTunes. However, iTunes is paying Facebook to show people that Taylor Swift has a new album. So what I get is a massive image of Taylor Swift’s RED, with my friend Randeep’s face in the corner.
For a casual scroll through the newsfeed, this is Facebook name-dropping my buddy to get me to pay attention to Taylor. For my friend, this is Facebook basically intimating that he’s has the same taste in music as my pre-teen niece.
This isn’t just a bad ad format. It’s actively user-hostile. This isn’t just Facebook mining your social graph to target an ad. This is Facebook bending the truth about what you like, to leverage your credibility for CPC ads.
